Lady Gaga released the highly anticipated video for her 7th single Alejandro yesterday.
Have you seen it? If not check it out now:
Wow! There is a lot going on here, what’s it all mean? Here’s my take.

First of all, keep an eye out for these two guys.
In my opinion they are the foundation of the video’s story.
When the video first opens, we see the character to the right. Pay attention, he has an ashtray by his foot, full of cigarette butts. This indicates that he could be Alejandro, as a main line in the chorus is ..”just smoke my cigarette and hush”.
The camera pans around and you can barley see the man to the left. He is not seen again until the end of the video.
The next thing you know, it looks like we have an army in which Gaga is Queen.
Gaga’s army is full of religious and gay undertones, most notably the star of David and the gay triangle.
As the video progresses, Gaga is seen leading the funeral for a fallen soldier. She carry’s the sacred heart as she utters the first words of the song “I know that we are young and I know that you may love me, but I just can’t be with you like this…”
It seems that there is a war going on, this can be seen behind the dancers who comprise the army.
Perhaps Gaga’s army has repealed the discriminatory Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell… I hope so, or the heels may be a dead giveaway.
Throughout this part of the video, the imagery leads you to believe that the men in Gaga’s army are ‘wrestling’ with their religion. Each one looking for guidance in a world where religion has caused chaos.
Perhaps someone from the outside has decided to enter Gaga’s world, and challenge their religious beliefs. Remember this guy?
He is the guy from the beginning of the video. He comes in from the war, the video flashes through all of the religious symbols. The video then flashes back to this guy (Whom I presume is Alejandro)
We hear and gunshot and the video flashes back to Gaga and her army. So I believe Alejandro is the dead soldier from the beginning of the video. He’s also gay, in case you missed that.
What is Gaga trying to capture with this video? I believe she is trying to show how much gay men wrestle with their religion. We have to because religion doesn’t accept us the way we are.
I have probably only scratched the surface of what Gaga was trying to accomplish with this video. If you have more ideas on the meaning, please comment below.
