After a December 2009 engagement party, Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza (a Malawi gay couple) were immediately arrested and thrown in jail. Being gay in Malawi is illegal and can carry up to a 14 year prison sentence.
Reuters reported that activists who spoke out in favor of the couple were also arrested. (Malawi Gay Couple Face Jail)
This week the couple was sentenced to the full 14 years in prison. Here is the news clip from CNN:
