Family Guy; Funny or Finally Too Far?

Over the past few years, Fox’s Family Guy has continued to push the envelope on socially acceptable humor. This season it seems that McFarlane has turned to the transgendered community to make his jokes.

In an episode earlier this season, Stewie dresses as a woman to get a part on a television show. Some of the punchlines in that episode rubbed me the wrong way, but I have to admit I am officially offended at the latest episode titled Quagmire’s Dad.

In the episode, Quagmire’s father, a decorated war hero announces that he will be going through a sex change. The show stops at nothing to make offensive transgendered jokes.

In one segment Peter makes a joke about feeding the chopped off penis to Brian. Lois even calls the surgery a circus. I have posted the full episode below for you to draw your own conclusions.

I enjoyed this show in the past, but I feel the jokes made at transgendered people in this episode are irresponsible. Thanks for opening up a slot on my DVR on Sunday nights Seth!

I started viewing this episode, and I am torn. I am an openly gay man, and I thought some of this episode was actually funny. I appreciate the complicated humor and the bring to light the issues envolved, however, I’m not sure if this epsode is appropriate, or if the gay community is just too uptight to accept this kind of humor without taking it personally.

I just don’t think his take on transgendered people is doing our community any favors. This is just my opinion, but I feel his ‘jokes’ are only fueling the misconceptions that have plagued the transgendered community for years, i.e. ‘it’, ‘he-she’ ‘circus freak’
