Can God, Country, Family and Openly Gay Artists Coexist In Nashville?

Country Singer Chely Wright is the People Magazine cover girl this week.   She is taking a huge step for the country music industry and coming out as an openly gay woman.

Wright gained fame back in 1997 with her first top 25 single, Shut Up And Drive.

This morning, Wright appeared on NBC’s Today show to talk about living life in the closet.  Among the noteworthy things she says, two quotes really struck home for me.

“Country music is typically known to be conservative.  Our fan base is conservative; pretty much our industry, the people who run it, have conservative beliefs, and it’s widely known to be about God and country and family. For some reason, people don’t think that can coexist with being a homosexual.”

Wright goes into a bit more detail when she recalls a conversation she had with John Rich of the group Big and Rich:

‘Hey, you’ve got to hit this gay thing head on, you’re not gay, are you? If you are, people won’t have it. It’s sick, it’s deviant; it’s unacceptable to country music fans.’

Wright also admits that she contemplated suicide before finally deciding to come out.   I have posted the interview below.
