Albert Snyder’s son Matthew was an Iraq war vet. If his death weren’t painful enough for his family to tolerate, Westboro Baptist Church showed up at the funeral to preach their usual message of hate.
Albert sued the church and was initially awarded a lot of money. That ruling was overturned and he was ordered to pay the church’s court costs, around $16,000. Several people, including Bill O’Reilly have stepped up to cover the family’s financial burden.
The Phelp’s followers claim they are the ones being discriminated against. They say the country is ‘doomed’ because of it’s acceptance of gay citizens. They even go as far as calling for it to become a crime to be gay.
The case is going to the supreme court, but it doesn’t look good for the Snyder family. Political analysts are saying that a ruling in the Snyder family’s favor could have large impacts on the first amendment.
