When you think of the first season of American Idol, who comes to mind? Kelly and Justin of course, but do you remember R.J. Helton?
R.J. was always one of my favorites on AI’s first season and I was sad to see him go in the final stretches. He made it to the top 5 and was able to release a Christian CD in 2004.
There were always questions circulating about his sexuality and in 2006 he came out officially on the Sirius Satellite Radio Show OutQ In The Morning. This ultimately forced him to leave the Christian music scene.
R.J continues to sing and record music. Over the weekend he gave an emotional performance of Scott Alan’s song “Blessing” at Birdland in New York.
The song is about a gay man pleading to his parents to accept him for who he is. Check out the video below:
