Christina Aguilera, a ‘Bionic’ Gay Advocate?

Christina Aguilera is ready to take a running leap back into the world of relevant pop culture.

In 1990 Christina began her journey to stardom as a contestant on the popular talent show Star Search.  She later went on to star in The New Mickey Mouse Club from 1993-1994.  It was during that time when Disney execs caught a glimpse of her genius talent.  They quickly contracted her to record the track Reflection for the animated movie Mulan.

The track was beautiful and opened the doors for Christina’s first album.   The album spawned 3 number one singles in the US and made Christina a household name.  After the success her debut album,  she worked on a number of collaborations with artists such as Ricky Martin and Pink.

In 2002 she released the follow up album, Stripped.  The album featured the song, Beautiful.  The video for that song was one of the first mainstream videos to feature gay and transgendered people in a positive light.  The song and video immediately became a gay anthem.  In case you have never seen this video I am including it below.

That video came out the same year I did, and it still moves me to this day.  Another fun fact, the song was written by Linda Perry of 4 non-blondes fame.  Linda Perry is openly gay.

In 2004 Christina continued to display her support for the gay community.  You may recall the infamous kiss between Britney Spears and Madonna at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards, but it is rarely discussed that Christina also locked lips with Madge that night.

Stripped was followed up in 2006 with the album Back To Basics. The album also spawned a number of hits as well as fueled the majority of the material used in Aguilera’s critically acclaimed Back To Basics world tour.

In the last few years Christina has stepped out of the limelight.  She did record a couple of new tracks for her Target/iTunes exclusive greatest hits collection Keeps Gettin’ Better: A Decade of Hits, but it has been almost 4 years since she released a new album.

While she was out of the limelight  she got married, became a mother and wrote the tracks for her highly anticipated fourth studio album Bionic (due out in June).

On her official website Christina posted some new information about the upcoming album today:

Since the release of my last studio album, Back to Basics, I have become a mother, a wife, and most recently an actress.  All of these new experiences have allowed me to face new challenges and explore different sides of myself I did not even know existed.  I am a woman who wears many hats and carries many responsibilities.  There are so many characteristics that define me, and this album was put together to represent all of those different parts of myself.

The lead single (posted above) is titled Not Myself Tonight.  In the song she talks about ‘kissing on boys and girls’ and proudly shrugs off the naysayers with the line “If you don’t like it, F*ck you”.

I’m very excited to hear the rest of the material on this album and can’t wait to see how she advocates for the gay community this time around.
