Today an Oregon jury found the Boy Scouts of America and the local scout chapter negligent in a landmark case that accused the national organization of covering up alleged sexual abuse of several of its boy scouts for years.
The plaintiff in the case is Kerry Lewis, a former Portland man, who was abused by assistant Scoutmaster Timur Dykes in the early 1980s.
The Boy Scouts were ordered by the Jury to pay 1.4 Million Dollars to Lewis. ABC is reporting that the case now moves into a punitive phase where the Boy Scouts could be forced to shell out another 25 Million Dollars in damages.
The Boy Scouts have issued a statement regarding the ruling, they say that they are:
“gravely disappointed with the verdict.”
and go on to say:
“We believe that the allegations made against our youth protection efforts are not valid. We intend to appeal
