‘Mom, Dad…I’m Gay’: Coming Out in Small Town Ohio

Late last week, NBC’s Today show caught up with a teen in Chillicothe Ohio. This is about 45 minutes from where Rich and I live.

He didn’t break any records, he didn’t win his school a trophy. Instead this teen is opening up to the media about coming out to his parents.

Speaking from my own experience, the reaction of his Dad and step-mother is relevant to any parent of a teen.

However, the way his real mother has treated him is an example of how NOT to react when your child tells you he or she is gay.

Eric, I think it is great that his dad and step mom were supportive. How sad and horrible that his mom would say she would rather he told her he got a girl pregnant. WTF? I can’t imagine how someone can say that to her/his son! Thanks for sharing!

Eric i know how it feels when I came out about 2 weeks ago my mom and step dad and well the rest of my family supported me but my dad just hasn’t spoken to me since. And school was rough last year, other people knew and treated me terible for it but I am happy that you had the courage to do that
